The new contract with Virgin will bring a host of passenger benefits including:

  • a £35 million package of improvements
  • an additional 5,500 standard class seats per day
  • proposals for direct links to London from both Shrewsbury and Blackpool
  • more jobs including apprenticeships and traineeships
  • improved on-board wi-fi service
  • investment to modernise and improve stations

The London to Holyhead route will benefit from:

  • free wi-fi at Crewe, Rugby, Stafford and Wolverhampton stations
  • ticket gates to be installed at Birmingham New Street, Crewe and London Euston stations
  • a new cleaning and maintenance programme at Crewe and Wolverhampton stations
  • new community champions to lead relationships with communities at Birmingham New Street, Crewe, Holyhead, Stafford and Wolverhampton stations
  • a commitment to divert 95% of waste from landfill to recycling at Crewe, Stafford and Wolverhampton stations
  • a commitment to promote use of Virgin’s Talent Academy at Crewe as a resource for local organisations

London to Glasgow Central and Edinburgh route

The London to Glasgow Central and Edinburgh route will benefit from:

  • free wi-fi at Birmingham International, Carlisle, Coventry, Lancaster, Oxenholme, Penrith, Preston, Stafford, Warrington Bank Quay, Wigan North Western and Wolverhampton stations
  • ticket gates to be installed at Crewe, Birmingham International, Birmingham New Street and London Euston stations
  • a new cleaning and maintenance programme at Crewe and Wolverhampton stations
